USS SPROSTON REPORT

JULY 2002

“Now hear this, set the Special Sea Detail. Single up all lines. Make preparations for getting underway. Destination Denver, Colorado Reunion 2002. ETA 1200 hours 18 September.”

REUNION 2002, DENVER, COLORADO, SEPTEMBER 18-22

Buddy Moore, Reunion Chairman, reports all systems are “go” and all plans are in place for another great Sproston Reunion. Buddy also reports that the fires that have occurred in the Denver area will have no impact on our reunion plans. A number of registrations have been received and we thank those who have responded early. It really makes our job a lot easier when you send your registration as soon as possible. We recognize that sometimes events take place, which necessitate a change in plans, if you notify us, you will receive a full refund. Also, don't forget to make those hotel reservations at the DoubleTree Hotel, Denver. There are a limited number of rooms available. The rate of $69 which includes a buffet breakfast is a good deal. All the information is enclosed, including a Registration Form. Why not complete the Registration Form now and send it to Treasurer, John Halase today. If you have any questions regarding the Reunion, please contact Buddy Moore, John Halase or Jim Marlatt. Phone numbers are on the Reunion Schedule enclosed.

SHIPMATES

There are still many sailors out there who served on board the Sproston who do not know about our Reunion Group and the good times we have at our Reunions. We can use your help in attempting to contact these shipmates. We encourage you to lend a hand in locating these former shipmates and invite them to join us in Denver.

SPROSTON . COM

Webmaster, Al Fitz is posting the names of registrants on the website. Al has also posted some additional pictures that have been sent to him by shipmates. Any additional information that becomes available regarding the Reunion will be posted on the website. Check it out www.Sproston.com.

ASBESTOSIS

A number of sailors who served on board destroyers were exposed to asbestos. This exposure can, potentially, cause lung and respiratory problems resulting in a condition known as Asbestosis. We don't want to alarm you, however, it is something you should be aware of. The Government has recognized the seriousness of the problem and set up a hotline. If you want more information call 1-800-827-1000.

MAILINGS/POSTAGE

As you know, The US Postal Service is implementing another rate increase. One of the problems the Reunion Group has is the failure of shipmates to notify us when they move. To save money, we do not use First Class postage but we do request notification of address changes. The Post Office charges eighty cents for each notification. If you send us a Change of Address it costs us nothing. Thanks for your assistance.

REUNION 2003

It's not too early to be thinking about a location for the Sproston 2003 reunion. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know so we can obtain information to review and discuss at our business meeting in Denver.

Since our last Report we have received word the following shipmates have passed away.

Arthur S. Miller, WT2 James R. Leach, CCS Richard J. Davis, RM3
